7 Copper Scrap Grades

Copper scrap is graded primarily by purity — the closer to 99.99% pure copper, the higher the grade and price. The grade determines which end application it suits, from electrical cables (requiring 99.9%+) down to general brass-making (94%+).

Bare Bright Copper
Also known as: #1 Bare Bright Wire / Candy
Cu 99.9%

Bare Bright is the highest-purity copper scrap grade — clean, uncoated, unalloyed copper wire, free of insulation, solder, and contamination. It commands the highest price of any copper scrap and is the benchmark against which all other grades are priced.

Typical Composition
Copper (Cu) 99.9%

Wire drawingElectrical conductorsPremium copper cathode productionHigh-purity alloying
#1 Copper
Also known as: No.1 Copper / Heavy Copper
Cu 99%+

#1 Copper includes clean, uncoated copper pipe, bus bar, clippings and punchings — all free from solder, paint, or heavy oxidation. Slightly below Bare Bright only because it may include heavier gauge material or minor surface oxidation.

Typical Composition

#2 Copper
Also known as: No.2 Copper / Mixed Copper
Cu 94–98%

#2 Copper is a step down from #1 — it may include copper with light coatings, minor soldering, paint, or plating. A cost-effective grade for refiners who can handle slightly higher impurities, still offering excellent recyclability.

Typical Composition

Copper Millberry
Also known as: Millberry Wire / EC Grade Copper
Cu 99.95%+

Millberry is continuous-cast or drawn copper wire rod scrap — the purest form of copper wire scrap. It is cleaned, bright, and has an electrical-grade purity level. Extremely valued by electrical cable manufacturers.

Copper Turnings
Also known as: Copper Borings / Copper Chips
Cu 95–98%

Copper turnings are the spiral or fine chips produced during machining operations on copper components. They are clean but may carry trace amounts of cutting oil, which must be accounted for in pricing. High volume from machining industries.

Burnt Copper Wire
Also known as: Lacquered / Enameled Wire Scrap
Cu 92–96%

Burnt copper wire is insulated copper wire that has had its insulation burned off. The burning process removes PVC or rubber insulation but leaves behind slight carbon or ash contamination. Widely generated by the electrical industry.

Typical Composition

Copper Cathode
Also known as: Electrolytic Copper / LME Grade
Cu 99.99%

While not scrap in the traditional sense, copper cathode is the refined product that sets the global price benchmark. We supply cathode as a value-added product alongside our scrap range for buyers needing guaranteed purity for critical applications.
