8 Brass Scrap Grades

Brass is a copper-zinc alloy — the ratio of these two metals (plus small additions of tin, lead, or nickel) defines each grade's properties and applications. Expand any grade below to see its typical composition, properties, and end uses.

Honey Brass
Also known as: Pital / Yellow Brass
Cu 63–68%

Honey Brass is one of the most commonly traded brass grades in India, named for its warm golden-yellow colour. It is a standard alpha-brass with good cold-working properties and excellent machinability, making it the workhorse grade for a vast range of manufacturing applications.

Typical Composition
Copper (Cu) 65%
Zinc (Zn) 33%
Lead (Pb) 1–2%

Red Brass
Also known as: Gunmetal / Lal Pital
Cu 80–85%

Red Brass has a high copper content, giving it a reddish-orange hue. It offers better corrosion resistance than yellow brass, especially in marine and plumbing environments. It flows well in casting and is prized for pressure-tight castings.

Typical Composition
Copper (Cu) 83%
Zinc (Zn) 10%
Tin (Sn) 4%
Lead (Pb) 3%

Gun Metal
Also known as: Admiralty Brass / Bronze-Brass Alloy
Cu 88%

Gun Metal is a tin-bearing high-copper alloy traditionally used for cannon barrels — hence the name. It offers exceptional wear resistance, pressure tightness, and corrosion resistance. Still widely used for high-pressure industrial and marine applications.

Typical Composition
Copper (Cu) 88%
Tin (Sn) 10%
Zinc (Zn) 2%

Hairwire Brass
Also known as: Birch Cliff / Wire Brass
Cu 60–63%

Hairwire Brass is a very specific grade consisting primarily of fine brass wire scrap — offcuts from wire drawing operations. It is clean, well-defined, and highly recyclable. Because it comes from wire manufacturing, it has consistent composition and is preferred by brass ingot makers.

Typical Composition
Copper (Cu) 62%
Zinc (Zn) 37%

Vilaiti Brass
Also known as: No.1 Heavy Brass / Imported Heavy Brass
Cu 61–68%

Vilaiti (meaning 'foreign' in Hindi) Brass refers to heavy, clean imported brass scrap — typically from Europe and the USA. It is highly valued for its consistent grade and minimal contamination, making it a premium input for brass foundries.

Typical Composition

Zinc (Zn) 33%
Lead (Pb) 1%

Naval Brass
Also known as: Admiralty Metal / Tobin Bronze
Cu 60%

Naval Brass is a zinc-copper alloy with a small addition of tin which dramatically improves its resistance to dezincification in seawater. It is the standard marine-grade brass used in shipbuilding and offshore applications.

Typical Composition
Copper (Cu) 60%
Zinc (Zn) 39%
Tin (Sn) 1%
Common Applications

Tukda Brass
Also known as: Mixed Brass Scrap / Brass Punchings
Cu 58–65%

Tukda refers to mixed or fragmented brass scrap pieces — punchings, turnings, and offcuts from machining operations. It is a widely available grade that requires some sorting. A cost-effective input for brass smelters who can handle mixed-grade material.

Typical Composition
Copper (Cu) 62%
Zinc (Zn) 35%
Lead (Pb) 2%

Common Applications

Pital Dana
Also known as: Brass Granules / Shotted Brass
Cu 62–66%

Pital Dana is granulated or shotted brass — processed from molten brass and water-quenched to form small granules. The uniform size and shape makes it ideal for precise melting and alloying, as granules melt consistently and quickly.

Typical Composition
Copper (Cu) 64%
Zinc (Zn) 34%
Lead (Pb) 1%
